KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Alverno College softball team continued its 2026 season in Kissimmee, Florida on Sunday, falling in a pair of closely fought non-conference contests. Bates College defeated the Inferno 8-2 in the morning matchup, while Ursinus College edged Alverno 12-11 in a back-and-forth game later in the day.
Senior
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) led the Inferno offense on the day, driving in four runs across the two games while recording three hits, including two doubles and three runs driven in. Sophomore
Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) also had a strong showing in the second game, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore
Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) scored three runs and collected two hits in the afternoon contest.
With the losses, Alverno moves to 0-4 on the young season, while Bates moved to 1-0 and Ursinus improved to 4-4.
Game One: Bates 8, Alverno 2
After Alverno led 1-0 through five innings, Bates used a late offensive surge to pull away from the Inferno, scoring five runs in the sixth inning and adding three more in the seventh to secure an 8-2 victory.
Alverno struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Anguiano walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from freshman
Mac Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/College Churchill). Sophomore
Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) later reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Anguiano to score and give the Inferno a 1-0 lead.
The game remained tight through the middle innings as Gardner kept the Bates lineup in check in the circle. However, the Bobcats broke through in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Maddy Miller that turned the momentum in Bates' favor.
Alverno added a run in the sixth inning when senior
Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) singled to center field, bringing home
Bailey Gardner to cut the deficit to 5-2. Bates responded with three additional runs in the seventh inning to close out the win.
Eschbach led the Inferno offense with two hits and an RBI, while Anguiano,
Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy),
Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), and Medrano each recorded a hit.
Bailey Gardner took the loss in the circle for Alverno, pitching six strong innings before sophomore
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) worked the final frame.
Bates starting pitcher Claire Ballard got the complete game win, allowing just one earned run over seven frames in her first collegiate start. Isabell Bettencourt finished the day 3-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Zariya Anderson and Sophie Garber each had two hits and an RBI.
Game Two: Ursinus 12, Alverno 11
The second game of the day featured an offensive battle as the Inferno rallied from an early deficit to take a late lead before Ursinus walked off with a 12-11 victory.
Ursinus opened the game with a six-run first inning, despite no hits, taking advantage of a bevy of walks. The Inferno, however, began to chip away at the lead in the second when Anguiano delivered an RBI double to score Medrano. After Ursinus scored again in the third, Reyes brought in another run in the fourth with an RBI single to center.
Alverno continued to battle back and broke through in the fifth inning with a three-run rally. Medrano drove in a run with a single before Anguiano added another double, driving in two runs to pull the Inferno within two.
The momentum continued into the sixth inning as Alverno plated four runs to take its first lead of the game. Hubli started the rally with an RBI double to left center, and Gardner followed with an RBI sacrifice bunt. A groundball to third followed by a throw off of Hubli's helmet allowed her to score from second base, tying the game and putting the go-ahead run on third.
Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) then gave the Inferno the lead with an RBI single off the third basemen's glove, giving Alverno the 9-8 lead.
The Inferno extended their lead in the seventh inning when Eschbach drove in a run with a groundout, and
Bailey Gardner followed with an RBI single to give Alverno an 11-8 advantage.
Ehni gave Alverno fantastic length as the Inferno rallied, ending the day with 5.1 innings pitched, collecting six fly outs and nine ground outs.
Ursinus responded in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring four runs to complete the comeback and secure the 12-11 victory.
Maddie Rea drove in three runs on two hits, also scoring twice, while Leah Bonsignore was also 2-3, scoring three times and driving in one with a double. Christa Andrusiewicz earned the win with two innings of work, allowing just one earned run.
