Milwaukee,WI- It was an exciting day of volleyball action at Reiman Gymnasium on Saturday. Without question the day of matches was highlighted by host team Alverno pulling out a thrilling five set win over Eureka College.
The two teams met previously on September 18
th, that match also went the distance with Eureka coming out on top. The Inferno would be victorious today, playing perhaps their finest match of the season to come back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat Eureka.
Alverno started the day in fine fashion with a 25-19 win in set one. Then Eureka would take the next two sets, by scores of 25-13 and 25-17. With their backs against the proverbial wall, Alverno would come together and rally to take set four by a score of 25-19.
In the decisive 5
th set, the Inferno rallied off of the energy of the home crowd, controlled the play and scored a decisive 15-9 win to take the match home.
Mary Needham (San Tan Valley, AZ) had 20 kills and
Olivia McCann (Ennis,TX) recorded 10.
Carley Juneau (Milwaukee,WI) continued her solid week of play, with 33 assists and 11 digs.
Brooklynne Hereford (Beloit,WI) would lead Alverno with 16 digs against Eureka.
The second match of the day saw Alverno take on Wisconsin-River Falls. The Inferno continued to play at a high level but fell in a close first set 25-21.
River Falls carried the momentum for a 25-11 win in the match's second set and a 25-12 win in the third.
Needham, Juneau, and
Brooklynne Hereford once again led Alverno in kills, assists, and digs with 7, 16, and 11, respectively.
The loss to UWRF did little to dampen the excitement for the day's earlier win over Eureka.
Tuesday evening, October 13
th, Alverno will travel to Maranatha Baptist for a 7 pm contest. The Inferno defeated MBU on September 15
th and will look to grab their second win of the season over the Sabercats.
