Alverno Opens Ripon Tournament with Matches vs. Saint Mary’s and Hamline

RIPON, Wis. —Alverno College Volleyball dropped two matches today in the first games at the Ripon Tournament hosted by Ripon College. The Inferno opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary's (Minn.), before losing to Hamline in the day's finale. 

The Inferno fall to 2-6 on the season.

Saint Mary's 3 – 0 Alverno College: 25-18, 25-16, 25-14
Saint Mary's controlled the tempo in the first set cruising to a 25-18 victory. Alverno College Inferno answered in the second set finding its grove but fell short 25-16. Both teams would battle for the third set but Saint Mary's once again found its grove to take the 25-14 third set victory.

Rolin West (New Orleans, La.) led the team collecting nine kills, one ace, one block, one assist, and seven digs.  Izzy Gianniou had 14 assists, three kills and four digs. Elyse Kozikowski finished with five kills.

Hamline 3 – 0 Alverno College: 25-20, 25-9, 25-13
The first set was a very close one as both teams battled back and forth for the lead with Hamline taking a 25-20 victory. The remaining sets followed a similar trajectory as the opening match for the Inferno, but the decision was in favor of Hamline taking both sets with a 25-9 and 25-13 victory.

West was the top offensive player for the Inferno in the second match collecting another double-double performance of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs. Sharisty Kooch collected nine digs. Izzy Gianniou finished with 14 assists, one kill and three aces.

Alverno College will return to the court tomorrow to close out the Ripon Tournament with matches against Carroll at 9 a.m. and College of St. Scholastica at 1 p.m.
