This Weekend in Alverno Athletics April 19-21

MILWAUKEE, Wis. –  The Alverno College Athletics department had a busy weekend with both the tennis and softball competing at home.
 
Alverno Tennis vs. Ripon College
The tennis team hosted Ripon College on April 19th at McKinley Park where they celebrated Senior Day. During the senior day celebration, Elizabeth Wolf-Nowakowski and Michal Irfan were honored. Ripon College registered the 9-0 win.
 
Michal Irfan is from Lahore, Pakistan. Michal is a Biomedical Science major. Irfan has played number two doubles and number four singles for the Inferno and has been a part of the Alverno College tennis program for the last four years.
After graduation, Michal will be working at Marquette University's Neuroscience department as a Research Technician.


Elizabeth Wolf- Nowakowski is a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native. Elizabeth is a Social Work major with a psychology minor. Wolf has played number two doubles and number three singles for the Inferno and has been a part of the Alverno College tennis program for the last three years. She has been playing tennis for the last six years starting as a sophomore in high school.
 
After graduation, Elizabeth is preparing to start her life and explore opportunities in human services after graduating a year early.
 
Alverno showed some fight in doubles play as Elizabeth Wolf-Nowakowski and Michal Irfan recorded two game wins and fell by an 8-2 margin. Riley Spencer and Morgan Golabowski took a few games in an 8-5 loss, while Yesenia Perez-Velazquez and Abigail Avila were unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped their doubles match, 8-0.
 
Despite the scores of 6-2, 6-0, Golabowski was locked in a closely contested showdown in the top flight of singles play, while Wolf-Nowakowski took two games in the first set as she fell by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
 
Avila's match saws some long rallies as well in the sixth flight of singles, as her match finished last amongst the singles bouts, with Ripon picking up the 6-1, 6-1 win. In the third singles, Spencer went down in order, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Wrapping up the lineup was Yesenia and Michal, who fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0.
 


 
Alverno Softball vs St. Norbert
The softball team hosted the Green Knights of St. Norbert College on April 20th at the Alverno Softball Field where they celebrated Senior Day. During the senior day celebration, Lexi Hess, Andrea Ramirez and Maggie Wilmot were honored.
 
Lexi Hess is from West Allis, Wisconsin. Lexi is a Communications major with a minor in English. Hess is an outfielder for the Inferno and has played for Alverno College for the last three years and has been playing softball for the last 20 years. Over her playing career Lexi has a total of 80 games played, and has collected 220 runs, 34 hits, 11 doubles, 4 triples, two home runs and 17 RBIs.
 
After graduation, Hess will be working for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference as the social media intern.
 
Andrea Ramirez is a West Covina, California native. Ramirez is a Communications major. Andrea is a first baseman and outfielder for the Inferno and has played for Alverno College for the last four years. She has been playing softball for the past 12 years. Over her playing career Andrea has a total of 88 games played, and has collected 12 runs, 46 hits, 9 doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs.
 
Maggie Wilmot is a Missouri City, Texas native. Maggie is a Public Health and Health Science major. Wilmot is a pitcher for the Inferno and has played for Alverno College the last four years and has been playing softball for the last 12 years. Over her playing career Maggie has a total of 59 games played, and has collected one run, five hits, one double, one home run and four RBIs. Pitching she had 27 strikeouts in the 520 batters faced. 
 
After graduation, Maggie will be starting an internship under the Wisconsin Area Health Education Center in connection with UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health as an Outreach Coordinator for the Dyslexia Achievement Centers in Milwaukee County, creating and revamping their outreach toolkits, social media, marketing to schools and psychologists, and identifying presenters for their support groups.
After graduation, Andrea plans to move back to California, where she plans on pursuing a career in Marketing or Public Relations, as of right now she is looking to pursue an administrative role at Fullerton College.
 
Alverno softball scored three runs in the day's opener but yielded a split decision to St. Norbert. The Inferno had eight hits in the opening, falling 19-3. However, after an explosive start in the second game, the Inferno was able to hold off the Green Knights securing the 5-4 victory.
 
Both teams battled to take the lead but both remained scoreless in the first third innings. The visitors was able to add two runs in the top of the four inning. The host answered in the bottom when junior Samantha Vinti singled to right field to score senior Lexi Hess to cut the score 2-1. In the top of the fifth St. Norbert plated an additional run to edge the score 3-1. Alverno in the bottom of the inning plated three runs when Laura Heim reached on a fielder's choice with Ramsey scoring. Next, Giselle Moreno singled to right field to score Michelle Hess and Moreno with the Red and Black taking a 4-3 lead. Both teams would add a run in the sixth inning but the Inferno was able to cruise to the 5-4 victory.
 
Both teams finished the contest with seven hits. Samantha Vinit finished the contest going 3-for-3 at the plate and one RBI.
 
Nevaeh Cruz was on the mound for the Inferno pitching all innings only allowing seven hits, four runs, one walk and two strikeouts in the 30 batters faced.
 
 
Alverno Softball vs Mount Mary
The softball team faced the Blue Angels of Mount Mary University to close out the weekend on April 21st.
Alverno softball scored three runs in the day's opener but yielded a split decision to Mount Mary. The Inferno had eight hits in the opening, falling 4-2. However, after an explosive start in the second game, the Inferno was able to hold off the Blue Angels securing the 15-3 victory.
 
The host was able to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams would remain scoreless over the next two innings. The visitors was able to add one run in the top of the four and the sixth innings to plate its only runs of the game. The host answered in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings plating a total of three runs to take the 4-2 victory.
In the nightcap, both teams battled to take the lead but both remained scoreless in the first two innings. The visitors was able to add three runs in the top of the third inning. Giselle Moreno started things off with being walked with Samantha Schrader scoring. Next, Dominique Tétrault singled to center field to score Moreno and Lexi Hess making the score 3-0. Jaycee Reyes tripled to left field to score Tétrault and Vinti to edge Mount Mary 5-0. MMU answered in the bottom of the inning adding one run to cut the lead 5-1. Alverno added three runs in the top of the fourth inning when Giselle Moreno hit one out of the park advancing the score 8-1 in favor of the Inferno. Mount Mary added its final runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alverno added seven additional runs in the remaining innings to secure the 15-3 victory.
 
Alverno finished the contest with 15 hits. Giselle Moreno finished the contest going 2-for-3 at the plate, two runs and six RBIs.
 
Nevaeh Cruz was on the mound for the Inferno pitching all innings only allowing 10 hits, three runs, one walk and five strikeouts in the 31 batters faced.
