NAPLES, Fla. (March 1, 2024)- The Alverno College softball team split two games on the final day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic, on Friday, earning a 4-0 victory over Anna Maria College before falling to the Amcats 3-5.

GAME 1 – Alverno College 4, Anna Maria College 0
Both teams battled to take the lead with the first three innings remaining scoreless. The bats came alive for the Inferno in the top of the fourth inning whenÂ
Michelle Hess scored on a passed ball. Alverno built on that lead in the top of the sixth inning plating three runs to take the 4-0 victory.
Giselle Moreno finished 2-for-3 with one run each and one RBI.Â
Samantha Vinti finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.Â

Savannah Fierke had an impressive game on the mound pitching all seven innings only allowing two hits, no runs and 18 strikeouts in the 23 batters faced. Fierke is now the school's new single-game record holder for strikeouts.
Alverno finished the contest with seven hits while Anna Maria collected two.

GAME 2 – Alverno College 3, Anna Maria College 5
Â
Alverno added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Anna Maria College answered in the top of the third by adding a run to cut the lead 2-1. The Amcats when added an additional run in the fourth to tie the game two all. AMC in the top of the fifth added another run but Alverno answered in the bottom of the inning by adding a run when Dominique Tetrault singled to center field with Moreno scoring to tie the game three all. In the sixth inning of the contest, AMC Â plated two additional runs to cruise to the 5-3 victory.Â

Eden Forget picked up the win for Anna Maria, tossing the four-inning.
Jocilyn Janeway pitched five innings for the Red and Black allowing 10 hits, four runs and four strikeouts in the 27 batters faced.

Maggie Wilmot finished on the mound pitching one inning, allowing two hits, one run and two strikeouts in the eight batters faced.

The Alverno College softball team will host the Eagles of Edgewood College in its 2024 home season opener on Saturday, March 23. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at the Alverno Softball Field.
