MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Alverno College women's basketball team opened its 2014-25 season hosting the Beavers of Blackburn College on Saturday afternoon (11/9), recording an 88-63 victory in Reiman Gymnasium.
Blackburn (0-2) got 22 points from Caidy Tuetken and 12 points from Miley Kwiatkopwski. The team finished a game-high 42 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Other contributors for the Beavers include Gracie Jent, who scored nine points and totaled eight rebounds, and Ella Wilson and Amya Harris finished with eight points each respectively.
Alverno College (1-0) scored 30 points off 24 Blackburn turnovers, capitalizing on its opportunities despite shooting just 47.4 percent from the field and outrebounded (47-42) the Beavers. At the free-throw line, the Inferno was (6-of-14) shooting 42.9 percent, while Blackburn shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28).
Riley Spencer led Alverno with 26 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Shiauna Nixon-Boyd recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Kyla Jamerson contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Newcomer
Gemini Ventura added 12 points, four assists, two blocks, three steals, and three rebounds.
Senior
Morgan Golabowski finished with seven points, four rebounds and one steal.
Raynique Binford and
AnaCristina Rodriguez-Ross rounded out the scoring for Alverno adding a combined score of nine.
In a strong first quarter, Alverno College out-scored Blackburn 28-7. The visitors got in their groove in the second quarter adding 18 points to Alverno's 19. The Inferno finished the third quarter outscoring Blackburn 26-16.
In the final stanza, Blackburn out-scored Alverno 22-15 with the Inferno securing the 88-63 victory.
The Inferno returns to action on Saturday, November 16th as they host Calumet St. Joseph (Ind.) with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
