Women's Basketball Edge Dominican 49-48 for First NACC Conference Win

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's basketball team earned a narrow victory on the road at Dominican University on Saturday afternoon as Keeshya Bellows led the team with 15 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals to win 49-48. It was the Inferno's first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory of the season in the Igini Sports Forum.

Along with Bellows, Morgan Whitten added 12 points and two rebounds. Junior guard Dionna Woodson and Riley Spencer both added nine points each respectively. 

With the win, Inferno advances to 3-13 on the season, and 1-6 in the NACC. Dominican's record falls to 1-16 and 0-8 in the NACC. 

Alverno won the first quarter, 11-9, but the Stars answered back trying to find their flow in the second but wasn't able to outscore the Inferno 13-12. Two free throws by Morgan Whitten gave the Inferno a 22-21 lead with 39 remaining in the half, then Dionna Woodson added a jump for Alverno to give the Inferno a 24-21 lead at the half. 

The second half remained tight between the two teams. In the final three minutes, the game a layup by Keeshya Bellows gave the Inferno a 49-32 lead. Dominican had free throw opportunities down the stretch. The Stars made 1-of-2. Dominican had the last shot as the Stars sunk a layup to cut the Inferno lead to one. 

The Inferno took a 30-second timeout with four seconds on the clock. The contest ended with a missed layup by the Inferno and a block by the Stars to come away with the NACC victory.

The Inferno are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Mequon, Wisconsin for a NACC match-up against Concordia Wisconsin. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside the R. John Buuck Field House.
