Box Score WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Alverno Volleyball team was back in action on Tuesday evening, taking part in a non-conference match against the Maranatha Baptist Sabercats on the road and falling in three sets to its hosts.
Alverno was led by junior
Rolin West, who had 14 kills on the night to go along with 11 digs for a double-double performance. Defensively, Junior
Izzy Gianniou had 10 digs on the evening, while
Selena Upshur added five and eight kills.
Alverno got off to a slow start, falling in the opening set by a 25-19 score. The Inferno tied the score at eight with a kill by
Rolin West, but the Sabercats then advanced its score running away with the lead taking set one 25-19.
In the second set Maranatha took control early before
Selena Upshur securing a kill. Alverno then cut the lead 18-4 on another kill by
Selena Upshur from
Sharisty Kooch. Maranatha rattled off additional points before Alverno scored two points to trim the deficit to 19-6 before the home team won 25-9.
Alverno's best set of the night came with a 22-point effort in the third set, which saw Alverno collect a service error to knot the early score at six. The Inferno then cut the lead at 9-7 on a kill by
Selena Upshur before the Sabercats grew the lead up 15-12. The Inferno cut the deficit to three but were unable to close the gap any further as the Sabercats won the third set, 25-22.
Alverno (0-5) will be back in action on the road Thursday night as the Inferno will visit Edgewood to open NACC conference play for a 7 p.m. start.
