NAPLES, Fla. (March 7, 2023)- The Alverno College softball team split two games on the second day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic, Monday, earning a 4-2 victory over SUNY Potsdam before falling 10-0 to John Carroll University.

GAME 1 – Alverno College 4, SUNY POTSDAM 2
Both teams battled to take the lead with the first three innings remaining scoreless. The bats came alive for the Inferno in the top of the fourth inning when
Izzy Torres singled to right field bringing
Sam Marchant across home plate taking a 1-0 lead. Alverno built on that lead in the top of the fifth inning plating three runs to extend the score 4-0. SUNY Potsdam answered in the bottom of the fifth adding a run to cut the lead 4-1. The home team added its final run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh with Alverno taking the 4-2 victory.
Sam Marchant had a very impressive game behind the plate.
Lexi Hess and
Hailie Eschbach finished 4-for-1 with one run each and one RBI.
Giselle Moreno finished 3-for-2.

Izzy Torres and
Dominique Tetrault all finished 3-for-1 each.
Natalie Akin had an impressive game on the mound pitching all seven innings only allowing six hits, two runs, four walks and three strikeouts in the 32 batters faced.
Alverno finished the contest with eight hits while SUNY Potsdam collected six.

GAME 2 – Alverno College 0, John Carroll University 10
Â
John Carroll added one run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. After Wilmot allowing one hit in her two innings of work, she did not allow a base hit in the third inning, while keeping the JCU offense from adding to its 1-0 lead. John Carroll answered in the third inning adding four additional runs to take a 5-0 lead. In the final inning of the contest, they plated five additional runs to cruise to the 10-0 victory.
Sam Marchant collected the lone hit for Alverno College in the contest.
Callow (5-1) picked up the win for John Carroll, tossing the five-inning, one-hit shutout
Wilmot (0-4) pitched four innings for the Red and Black allowing eight hits, five runs, one walk and four striking outs in the 22 batters faced.

Izzy Torres finished on the mound pitching 1 inning, allowing five runs in the loss. The senior allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one.

The Alverno College softball team will take on Swarthmore College on field five at 8:00 a.m. (CST) and Drew University on field four at 10:00 a.m. (CST) for day three of the Gene Cusic Classic.
