MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Sophomore guard
Kyla Jamerson scored a game-high 15 points, and
Laila Alramahi and
Riley Spencer netted 11 in leading the Alverno College women's basketball team to a 57-45 victory over Mount Mary University on Tuesday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium. The Inferno improve to 13-2 on the season, with head coach Karlyle Ross reaching his first collegiate win of the season with the Red and Black.
It was a slow start for both the Inferno and Blue Angels, with 10 points in the first five minutes of the game, split 6-4 in favor of Alverno.
Riley Spencer scored the first bucket for the Inferno at 8:51, with
Victoria Parra notching the Infernos' 3-pointer to tie the game six all. By the end of the hard-fought first quarter, the Inferno had a one-point advantage at 12-11.
To start the second quarter,
Laila Alramahi started the scoring with a three pointer at the 8:24 mark to give the Inferno a 15-13 lead. The Blue Angels answered with a three pointer at the 2:46 mark to tie the game 21 all.
Kyla Jamerson added a basket to close out the scoring of the second quarter at the 00:48 mark to give Alverno a 23-21 edge at the half.
Laila Alramahi opened the second half with a bucket at 9:02, followed by
Kyla Jamerson three pointer to cut Mount Mary lead 32-29. The Inferno then tied the game with
Kyla Jamerson securing a free throw to make the game 34 all.
Riley Spencer then ccollected two points on a jumper to give the Inferno a 36-34 lead. Two free throws by
Kyla Jamerson closed out the scoring of the quarter to give the Inferno a 38-36 edge.
The fourth and final quarter began with
Morgan Whitten three pointer at 7:15, then
Madalyn Kavalary collected a basket to grow the lead 44-41.
Riley Spencer then added a three pointer bring the score 47-43 in favor of the Inferno.
Kyla Jamerson added another three pointer at the 00:58 mark to advance Alverno's score 58-45. The Inferno then would cruise in the remaining seconds to cruise to their first victory of the season.
The Inferno shot 33.3% from the floor (19-57), making 9-23 three point attempts and 10-22 free throws. Mount Mary shot 24.2% (16-66), making 4-26 three point attempts and 9-15 free throws. The Inferno controlled the boards, 50-49, while also maintaining a 14-9 points-off-turnovers for the game.
Alverno will be back in action on Saturday when the Inferno travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin for a match-up against Carthage. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 pm.
