Volleyball Returns to Action with Non-Conference Tilt at Maranatha

Box Score WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Alverno Volleyball team was back in action on Tuesday evening, taking part in a non-conference match against the Maranatha Baptist Sabercats on the road and falling in three sets to its hosts.
 
Alverno was led by senior Alex McMath and sophomore Rolin West, who each had six kills apiece on the night. Sophomore Izzy Gianniou had a team-leading pair of aces, while freshman Natalie Onozie had eight assists on the night.
 
Defensively, freshmen Breann Flannery and Sharisty Kooch each had seven digs on the evening, while Onozie added five. Classmate Jalea Taylor had four blocks, while junior Selena Upshur was second on the team with three and freshman Lynnica Harley picked up a pair of blocks.
 
Alverno got off to a slow start, falling in the opening set by a 25-13 score. The Inferno tied the score at three with a kill by Upshur, but the Sabercats went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 advantage before running away late in the set, 25-13.
 
In the second set after Maranatha took a two-point lead before McMath won back service with a kill. McMath then tied the score at three with a kill, while a Sabercat service error evened the score for Alverno at five. Maranatha rattled off eight unanswered points to open a 13-5 lead before Alverno scored four of the next six point to trim the deficit to 15-9 before the home team won 25-17.
 
Alverno's best set of the night came with a 19-point effort in the third set, which saw Upshur collect a service ace to knot the early score at four. The Inferno then took a lead at 6-5 on an ace by Gianniou before a six-point run by Maranatha put the Sabercats up 12-6. The Inferno cut the deficit to four but were unable to close the gap any further as the Sabercats won the third set, 25-19.
 
Alverno (4-7, 0-2 NACC) will be back in action on the road tomorrow night as the Inferno will visit Mount Mary for a 7 p.m. start at the Bloechl Center.
