Soccer Opens Season with Matchup at Maritime (N.Y.)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Alverno soccer team opened its season on Friday afternoon, playing outside of the Central Time Zone for the just the fourth time in program history and first since the 2015 campaign. The Inferno played first-time opponent Maritime College, and fell to the Privateers by a 7-0 score.
 
Playing an afternoon matinee on Reinhart Field, the Inferno got 14 saves from freshman goalkeeper Emily Anguiano, who played the entirety during their collegiate debut.
 
Five other Inferno made their collegiate debuts as Monce Cervantes, Lilly Coronado, Ashley Gutierrez-Diaz, Ashley Ibarra, and Haley Youngblood all suited up for the red, black and white for the first time.
 
Alverno held the Privateers to just two goals in the opening half, with Maritime strikes coming in the 24th and 29th minutes. Maritime scored twice in a four-minute span from the 59th to the 63rd minutes before adding a trio of late goals to close out the scoring.
 
Wrapping-up the two-game trip to the New York area, Alverno (0-1-0) will visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. (EST)/4 p.m. (CST).
