MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team opened the home half of its schedule on Wednesday afternoon with a victory over crosstown foe Mount Mary by the score of 4-3 on the Alverno Soccer Field.
Â
The Inferno got a pair of goals from senior
Angela Chobanian, to give her seven for her career in 48 career contests. Senior
Aimee Espino scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring for Alverno, while the Inferno also got the first career goal in what proved to be the game-winner from junior
Ashley Flores.
Â
Sophomore
Georgia Wise made an impact on the game with a pair of assists, including a cross off of a corner kick that glanced off the top of the crossbar and landed right to Chobanian for the team's second goal of the game. Junior
Alo Cervantes also had an assist on the game, with a lead pass for Espino's goal.
Â
In goal, junior
Kenzie Bermudez stopped four shots, while allowing the three Blue Angel tallies as she improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
Â
Alverno took to the action early with a trio of shots by Wise, before Cervantes led Espino down the right wing that was chipped over the goalkeeper's head in the early stages of the ninth minute to put the Inferno ahead by a 1-0 score.
Â
The Inferno offense continued to drive towards the Mount Mary goal, as Flores and Cervantes registered shots, while Chobanian had a shot stoned as well. After a shot by junior
Katie Shipley was blocked and went off the goal line, the Inferno were awarded a penalty kick.
Â
Wise sent the cross off the crossbar, still in play, before it landed on the right leg of Chobanian, who buried it into the vacant part of the goal to put Alverno ahead by a pair.
Â
In the closing minutes of the half, it was once again Chobanian, to score on an individual effort as she chipped another shot over the Mount Mary goalkeeper to give Alverno a 3-0 halftime lead.
Â
Mount Mary finally broke onto the scoreboard on a strong individual effort as the Blue Angel player was able to collect her own rebound for the goal to trim the Inferno lead to two.
Â
On another attempt in front by Wise, the sophomore's initial shot was blocked before a second attempt was stopped by the Blue Angel goalkeeper. It was Flores to scoop up the rebound and clean up to put the Inferno ahead by a 4-1 score.
Â
The Blue Angels refused to go down, scoring twice in the span of just over a minute with just 41 seconds left in regulation. The clock was working on Alverno's side as the Inferno were able to avoid further damage and hang on for the 4-3 win.
Â
Alverno (2-0-0) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, when the team visits Crown for a non-conference tilt against the Storm at 1 p.m. Please note that Sunday's contest with Bethany Lutheran was cancelled and will not be made up.
