MEQUON, Wis. – The Alverno volleyball team played its first conference road match of the season on Tuesday evening, visiting the nationally ranked Concordia Falcons at the R. John Buuck Field House. The host Falcons swept the match from the Inferno by a 3-0 score.

The Inferno were led by freshman
Rolin West, who talled seven kills and had a pair of aces and was one off of the team lead in digs with nine. Sophomore
Jenna Flayter put together a strong hitting night as she connected on three kills in 15 attempts, while also adding a trio of digs on the defensive side; Flayter also added the team's lone block on the night that came in the opening set.

Senior
Alex McMath had 10 assists on the night to go along with 10 digs, while sophomore
Selena Upshur tallied one kill and had five digs on the evening. Junior
Ziri Hernandez-Bustos connected on one service ace and had one dig on the night, while sophomore
Kiara Ellison got the start and played all three sets for the Inferno.

Concordia controlled the early stages of the opening set, but Alverno took advantage of several Falcon miscues capped off by a Flayter kill to top off a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to 16-9. Alverno proved to be a thorn in the side of the Concordia squad, fighting off two set points on a kill by Flayter and the Hernandez-Bustos ace before the Falcons clinched the opening set, 25-13.Â

After dropping the second set, the Inferno fought right back in the third set as Alverno equaled the score at two before a bad set by the Falcons gave Alverno a 3-2 lead. Alverno took the lead again at 4-3, before dropping the next three points to trail 6-4. Alverno rattled off the next four points to take an 8-6 lead, including an ace by West to put the Inferno ahead by a pair.

The Inferno were able to keep the lead at two through the 10-8 point before Concordia connected on five points to regain the lead. Alverno thwarted the Falcon rally on a kill by Flayter before the Falcons finished off the set by a 25-15 score to win the match in straight sets.

Alverno (1-5, 0-2 NACC) will be off the next few days before getting back to action on Friday, October 1, when the team visits Benedictine beginning at 7 p.m. in Lisle, Illinois.
