MILWAUKEE – The Alverno volleyball team was back in action on Tuesday evening inside the Reiman Gymnasium, as the Inferno hosted the Edgewood Eagles in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. The Eagles won in straight sets, winning the three sets by the scores of 25-11, 25-14, 25-13.

Leading the way for the Inferno was freshman
Rolin West, who tallied seven kills on the night in 30 swings. West was one dig shy of a double-double, while she also added one assist and one block on the night.

Sophomore
Jenna Flayter notched six kills and led the team with a .235 hitting percentage as she recorded a pair of blocks and also had four digs on the match. Classmate
Selena Upshur had three kills, and had four blocks on the night and also chimed in with five digs.

Senior
Alex McMath led the team with 14 assists, as she also added one kill and was one off the team lead in digs with eight on the night.

Sophomore
Kiara Ellison tallied a pair of digs, while sophomore newcomer
Zahria Green had two digs in her collegiate debut.

Edgewood controlled much of the early tempo of the opening set, as Alverno had not played in two weeks since their conference match against Concordia Wisconsin. The Eagles led by a 9-2 score, but Alverno connected on six of the next nine points in the match on an pair of kills by West and a service ace from Upshur.

Alverno trailed 8-2 in the early going of the second set, before connecting on a pair of kills by West, and another by Flayer, followed by an attacking error by Edgewood to pull Alverno back within three at 9-6. The teams exchanges points throughout the remainder of the set before the Eagles pulled away late with the 25-14 win.

The Infeno led by one to open the third set, as the score remained even through the first eight points. Alverno tied the score again at six and then again at nine as Flayter put down the ninth Inferno point. The Eagles went on an 8-2 run to pull away in the middle stages of the set before closing out the match on another 8-1 run to pick up the straight-set victory.

Alverno (1-6, 0-5 NACC) will be back in action on Wednesday evening, when the team visits crosstown foe Mount Mary for a 7 p.m. start at the Bloechl Center.
