MEQUON, Wis. – The Alverno softball team travelled to Catalyst Park on the shores of Lake Michigan, as the Inferno took on the Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons swept the doubleheader by the scores of 12-0 and 9-0.
Â
Senior
Kaitlynn Schmick got the start in the opener and struck out one batter as she pitched the first two innings of the game. Classmate
Lauren Greif came on in relief and pitched the final two innings as she allowed three runs over her outing on 32 pitches.
Â
Greif also went the distance in the second game as she needed just 50 pitches to get through four innings of work, as she didn't allow a run over three innings from the second through the fourth.
Â
Alverno was only able to muster one hit on the entirety of the day as freshman
Maggie Wilmot collected a single in game two.
Â
Game 1
Sophomore
Izzy Torres reached on a two-out walk in the opening inning, but the next batter struck out to send Schmick to the circle.
Â
In the bottom of the first, Schmick allowed a leadoff single but the runner was erased as sophomore
Megan Bradford threw out the runner trying to steal second base. Schmick stranded one runner on base as the game moved to the second inning with no score.
Â
After Alverno went down in order in the top of the second, Concordia Wisconsin jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a solo home run to start off the inning before the Falcons added eight more in the frame to take a 9-0 lead. The Falcons tacked on three more runs off of Greif in the bottom of the third to take a 12-0 advantage.
Â
The remainder of the game went well for the pitchers on both sides, as neither offense was able to put a runner on the base paths between the top of the fourth through the top of the fifth, as Greif retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Game 2
After going down in order in the top of the first, Concordia's offense woke back up in the bottom of the inning with a five-run first frame. Freshman
Andrea Ramirez picked up an outfield assist to end the inning as the Falcon batter looked to extend a double into a triple.
Â
Greif had the leadoff batter reach via error in the bottom of the second before a wild pitch advanced the runner into scoring position. Three batters later, Greif had retired the side as she stranded the runner on third base.
Â
In the bottom of the third, Greif did not allow a baserunner in the bottom of the third via one flyout and a pair of groundouts. She stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out error and a two-out single, but left the pair stranded in scoring position to keep the game at 5-0 in favor of Concordia Wisconsin.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons scored four runs to stop the game as they took a nine-run lead in the bottom of the fifth to cap off the sweep on the afternoon.
