Alverno Opens Weekend Set with Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday Afternoon

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno softball team hosted the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday afternoon for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader, with the Falcons taking the opener 12-0 before Concordia swept the day with a 9-1 game two win.

Alverno was led by sophomore Zimri Lemonds, who tallied a pair of hits on the day, including her third home run of the season for the lone run in game two. Lemonds had five total bases on the day. Classmate Izzy Torres had a single in game two for her only hit of the afternoon.

In the circle senior Kaitlynn Schmick went the distance in game one as she struck out three batters over her five innings of work, while allowing just seven earned runs. Schmick later came on in game two and retired the only batter she faced.

Junior Natalie Akin got the start in game two and worked in and out of trouble throughout the contest as she pitched four innings and allowed five earned runs with one strikeout. Torres came on to toss 2/3 of an inning while allowing two earned runs over that span.

Game 1
Concordia Wisconsin opened the game with a double, and two batters later had a walk to put a pair of runners on. After a passed ball, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead with a two-run single.

Freshman Izzy Luevano grounded out to open the game but that proved to be the only ball put in play as the Inferno faced one of the top pitchers in the conference. Sophomore Megan Bradford was hit by a pitch in the third inning, serving as Alverno's lone baserunner during the opener.

The Falcons scored one run in game two, before adding a pair in the third. A four-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth inning capped off the scoring for Concordia Wisconsin as the Falcons ran away late with the 12-0 win.

Game 2
Akin yielded a run in the opening inning but stranded a pair in scoring position to limit the damage and bring up the Inferno bats in the bottom of the first.

After a strikeout to start off the offense, Lemonds came up with the bases empty and one down and sent a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at one.

Concordia scored a single run in the second before adding a pair in the top of the fourth to open up a 4-1 lead. The big inning game as the Inferno needed three pitchers to get through the fifth inning as the Falcons plated five runs on four hits as Akin started the inning before Torres and Schmick were able to retire the three batters needed to send the game to the bottom of the fifth.

Alverno went down in order in the bottom of the inning as Concordia swept the doubleheader with a 9-1 score in game two.
