Bermudez Stops Career-High 27 Shots in Return to Action vs. Benedictine

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team returned to action at home on Wednesday afternoon, as the Inferno hosted the Benedictine Eagles on the Alverno Soccer Field. Despite a career-high 27 saves from junior goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez, it was ultimately the Eagles to notch the 4-0 win.

The 27 saves for Bermudez eclipses her previous career-high which came during her freshman season as the netminder stopped 24 shots in a road contest against Concordia Chicago on October 9 of the 2019 campaign. Bermudez' season-high to date came in the team's last contest, as she stopped 20 attempts against MSOE on September 18.

The 27 saves by Bermudez places her in a tie for fifth on the single-game saves list. The all-time single-game saves leader is Sheila Wischer, who made 37 stops against Concordia Wisconsin during the 2005 season.

Alverno was able to muster several offensive chances against the Eagles as senior Shaye Wolfe picked up two shots, with one coming on frame. Junior Alo Cervantes also had one shot, which was on target but denied as the Benedictine goalkeeper was credited with two saves on the match.

Benedictine scored early in the contest as the Eagles tallied the opening goal in the sixth minute on a strong shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Alverno's defense held Benedictine scoreless over the ensuing 27 minutes, before the Eagles scored on a sharp-angle shot in the 33rd minute to cap off the first-half scoring.

The Eagles were held scoreless through the first 30 minutes of the second half, but found the back of the net twice more in the 76th and 80th minutes to round out the scoring at four goals for the Benedictine squad.

Bermudez made 20 of her 27 saves in the opening half, as the Eagles registered 79 shots in total with 31 on target. Corner kicks were also in favor of Benedictine at a 14-0 clip.

Alverno (2-3, 0-7 NACC) will be on the road on Saturday, when the Inferno visits the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons for a 3:30 p.m. start on Fitting Field in nearby Mequon, Wisconsin.
