Soccer Settles for Draw With Mount Mary, 2-2

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team hosted the Mount Mary Blue Angels for the second time this season and settled for a 2-2 draw on the Alverno Soccer Field.

For the Inferno, it was the program's first tie since the 2014 season, when Alverno drew with Maranatha on the road on September 9 of that season. It was also the first time that the Inferno had played an overtime game at home since later in the 2014 season, when Alverno fell to Wisconsin Lutheran, 2-1 in double overtime. Today's result was Alverno's first home tie since the 2006 campaign, when the Inferno tied Maranatha by a 2-2 score on October 3.

Seniors Angela Chobanian and senior Shaye Wolfe each scored on penalty kick opportunities, as Wolfe led the Inferno with seven shots and four shots on goal. Chobanian was credited with two shots as both of those came on frame.

Also collecting shots for the Inferno were juniors Alo Cervantes and Katie Shipley, along with freshman Muriah Alejandrino. Cervantes and Alejandrino had one shot on goal apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez made three saves on the effort as she was credited with the first tie of her career to go along with her seven career victories.

Mount Mary scored first with an early goal just 2:31 into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. Cervantes recorded Alverno's first shot in the 19th minute. The Inferno were granted a penalty kick in the 20th minute but the shot was denied by Mount Mary to keep the Blue Angels ahead by one.

The Inferno were granted another penalty kick in the 31st minute on a foul in the box, which Chobanian converted to knot the score at one. The Inferno followed the goal with a shot by Alejandrino that was stopped, followed by a Wolfe shot that went wide.

As play progressed well into the second half, the Blue Angels converted on a goal off of a pass into the box, which put Mount Mary ahead by one goal again at 2-1.

Less than 10 minutes later, another yellow card in the box by Mount Mary allowed Wolfe the chance to even the score, which she did as Wolfe scored the 27th goal of her career to move her into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time scoring list at Alverno.

With the score even at two after 90 minutes of play the Inferno returned to overtime for the second time this season, looking to recapture an extra-time victory as was completed in the season opener. Shipley took one shot that was wide of the goal, while Chobanian had a shot that was stopped during the first overtime period, but the score remained deadlocked.

Wolfe added a shot on goal in the 102nd minute, but that too was stopped before Mount Mary mustered its only shot of the extra sessions with an off-target shot in the 106th minute.

Alverno (2-6-1, 0-10-0 NACC) will return to conference competition on Wednesday, when the team visits Dominican for a 3:00 p.m. start on the West Campus Field in River Forest, Illinois.
