Box Score PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Back in action once again, the Alverno volleyball team travelled to the Woltzen Fieldhouse on the campus of Lakeland University for another conference matchup as the Inferno battled the Muskies. Lakeland took the straight-set match by the scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-15.
On the match Alverno had 37 digs as a team in an effort against the high-octane Lakeland offense, junior Morgan Lemner led the effort with 15 digs, while freshman Kierra Sherlock added seven and sophomore Isabelle Gemza picked up six digs.
The Inferno had six aces with two apiece coming from Lemner and sophomore Alex McMath, while Gemza and Sherlock each had one apiece. McMath led the Inferno with 20 assists, while both Gemza and Sherlock contributed to Alverno's team total of 22.
Sherlock was the team leader in kills with eight in her second career conference match on 24 swings. Junior Neilee Newton had six kills on a team-high 30 attacking attempts, while junior Ari Rehberg had five kills on 18 swings. McMath had two kills, while senior Melanie Coffey and freshman Kenzi Kaminski each had one kill apiece.
The first set was equally contested as the Inferno held a brief 6-5 lead before Lakeland evened the score at six. Sherlock had a kill and an ace to push the Inferno ahead by a pair, but the pesky Muskies refused to let the Inferno run away.
The set was tied at 11, and then again at 16 before a kill by Sherlock and an ace from McMath put Alverno up 18-16. After losing service, Alverno got it right back on a kill by Coffey before an unforced error put Alverno ahead by three at 20-17. After exchanging one point apiece, Lemner notched an ace to give Alverno a four-point advantage, but the Muskies rolled off seven unanswered to take the opening set 25-22.
Lakeland controlled much of the second set and led by as many as 10 at 17-7 before the Inferno chipped away as Newton recorded a pair of kills to get Alverno back within six. Ultimately it was the Muskies to close out the set on an 8-6 run to take the second by a 25-17 score to take a 2-0 match lead.
Both sides exchanged the lead early in the third set as the score was tied by the Inferno by Sherlock with a kill to make the score 6-6. After a four-point run by Lakeland, Alverno got two of the next three points to make it 11-8 in favor of Lakeland, however an 8-2 run by the Muskies put the set out of reach at 19-10 before the home team secured the three-set win by a 25-15 score.
Alverno (1-13, 0-2 NACC) will return home for the first time in 17 days, when the Inferno host the Cougars of Concordia Chicago beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 from the Reiman Gymnasium.
