MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team got back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon as the Inferno blanked the Mount Mary Blue Angels by the score of 3-0 on the Mount Mary Soccer Field.
Leading the way for the Inferno was once again sophomore Shaye Wolfe, who registered three points on the afternoon with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Angela Chobanian scored her first goal of the season, while freshman Andy Lopez recorded her first career goal to open the scoring for the Inferno. Junior Jess Flores added one assist for Alverno, as she picked up the helper on Wolfe's tally.
Freshman Kenzie Bermudez had a fairly light afternoon as she was not forced to make a single save, while still picking up the shutout victory. Alverno's defensive unit held the Blue Angels to just two shots overall on the match with both of those coming off target.
As a team, Alverno outshot its host by a 30-2 margin, while also amassing more corner kicks at an 8-2 clip.
Alverno's offense got to work early as the Inferno were awarded a corner kick just 66 seconds into the match. The Inferno took the first four shots of the match, with the fourth coming off the foot of Lopez, who opened the scoring on the afternoon as she received a pass from Wolfe to make the score 1-0.
Lopez took the game's next shot, while Chobanian and freshman Katie Shipley followed with shots of their own. Alverno continued the offensive attack and Chobanian scored the next goal in the 28th minute to put the Inferno ahead by a pair.
The Inferno kept firing shots on target, which included a shot by Flores in the 41st minute that rang off the crossbar. Just over two minutes later, Lopez took another shot that was high over the crossbar.
Alverno wrestled back possession and took advantage of the offensive chance as Flores fed Wolfe for her fourth goal of the season with just over a minute to go in the half as the Inferno's lead swelled to three.
As the game advanced to the second half the Inferno continued to place shots on target as Shipley, Flores, and freshman Caitlin Laurenson all connected on shots. Freshman Sasha Sliwinski took one offensive chance in the 76th minute, while Wolfe and Chobanian both took chances in the waning minutes.
Alverno (2-3) will get back to action at home on Friday afternoon, when the Inferno welcome the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan to the Alverno Soccer Field for a 4 p.m. start. Friday's contest will also be Alverno's Faculty/Staff Appreciation contest.
