MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team came away with a convincing 8-1 victory over the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers on Friday afternoon as the team was led by sophomore Shaye Wolfe with three goals and two assists on the afternoon.

Wolfe had a team-high nine shots on goal with 11 shots total in 76 minutes of play. Junior Jess Flores had one goal and two assists while taking eight shots, with sophomore Angela Chobanian picking up one goal and two assists on four shots on the afternoon.

Freshmen Alo Cervantes, Andy Lopez and Sasha Sliwinski all scored individual goals on the afternoon, for Sliwinski it was the first goal of her career. Senior Mackenzie Mathies added one assist on the final goal of the night on a quick touch pass off of a corner kick.

Freshman Katie Shipley had four shots on the match, while classmate Faith Josko notched a pair of shots. Fellow rookie Caitlin Laurenson picked up one shot on the match.

In goal, freshman Kenzie Bermudez made five saves on the afternoon with two diving stops coming in the opening half.

Alverno scored early and often as Wolfe tallied her fifth of the season on an unassisted mark at the 7:51 mark. Less than five minutes later the team scored again as Wolfe slotted a ball to the opposite post, where Chobanian rang the ball of the inside of the post and into the net to give Alverno a 2-0 lead.

Wolfe capitalized twice more as the period progressed, with both goals coming off of passes by Flores as the Inferno doubled its lead to 5-0. Just over two minutes later it was Flores' turn to get on the goal-scoring party as she scored her second of the year off of a dish by Chobanian.

A few moments later the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick and was able to score just off the fingertips of Bermudez to break the shutout and make the score 5-1.

As the game shifted into the second half, the Inferno got on the board again as Lopez scored her second of the year off of another assist by Chobanian. Sliwinski scored her first on an individual effort to increase Alverno's lead to six in the 53rd minute of play.

In the 75th minute, Alverno scored its final goal of the match as Cervantes capitalized on her second goal of the season as she received a quick touch-pass from Mathies just after Wolfe sent a corner kick towards the far post.

Alverno (3-3) will look to keep its momentum going on Saturday when the team hosts Eureka at 1 p.m. on the Alverno Soccer Field.
