MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team returned home to take on the Lawrence Vikings on Saturday afternoon and fell by the score of 5-0 on the Alverno Soccer Field.
Highlighting the afternoon was freshman goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez, who stopped 20 shots on the afternoon for a new season and career high in saves. Bermudez made eight stops in the opening half, before registering a dozen in the second half.
Offensively the Inferno were led by sophomore Shaye Wolfe, who tallied four shots on the afternoon with two of them coming on target. Freshman Andy Lopez also had a shot on goal, while playing all 90 minutes.
Lawrence took the game's opening shot just under two minutes into the game that was the first of Bermudez' 20 stops on the afternoon. Wolfe had a chance at the beginning of the 11th minute that was denied by the Viking starting goalkeeper.
The Vikings broke through in the 15th minute on an unassisted tally, before adding a second goal just a few minutes later to take a 2-0 advantage.
Bermudez continued to make saves as she added a few more over the ensuing minutes and Viking possessions, before Lawrence added a third goal with nine minutes to go in the half before the period expired and Alverno trailing by three.
In the opening stages of the second half, Wolfe tallied another shot that was on target but denied by the Vikings, who switched goalkeepers at the break. Bermudez continued to be a stone wall for the Inferno as she denied four shots in a three-minute span to keep the Viking lead at three.
Lawrence scored twice more in the final 26 minutes of the second half, included a goal off of a lucky corner kick bounce for the fifth and final tally of the night.
Alverno (1-3) will head on the road this coming Tuesday as the team takes on Mount Mary on Tuesday afternoon, with the opening kickoff slated for 4 p.m. on the Mount Mary campus.
