Strong Shooting Effort Not Enough in Basketball Matchup vs. Northland

MILWAUKEE – Senior Sara Redlin registered a career-high 21 points as she picked six three-pointers, in the Alverno basketball team's loss to the Northland Lumberjills by the score of 95-78 at the Bloechl Center on the Mount Mary campus as part of the Mount Mary Tip-Off Tournament.

Alverno as a team had a strong night shooting from the field as the Inferno went 46.9% from the field, while the Inferno also connected on 7-of-11 from three-point land for an average of 63.6%.

In addition to her career-high 21 points, Redlin's six three-pointers was also a career high eclipsing her mark of four also set last season in the team.

Freshman Eniya Madden led the team in scoring as she had 23 points on the afternoon, while also tallying a team-high 10 field goals including one three-pointer. Classmate Keeshya Bellows had 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds, while junior Mikayla Tessay also had the team lead with eight rebounds.

Junior Dom Hudson had nine points, while classmate Alicia Hornbuckle had eight in the effort. Freshman Ashley Flores also picked up another appearance towards the end of regulation.

Bellows led the team with three blocks, while Madden had a pair and Tessay had one block as well. Madden and Hudson each had two steals apiece to lead the afternoon.

After the Lumberjills took an early lead at 2-0, the Inferno answered back with seven unanswered points including the first of Redlin's three-pointers for the afternoon. Northland tied the score at seven, before Redlin picked up another long-range shot. Alverno continued to hold one-possession leads down the stretch of the opening quarter before Northland pulled up for a three-pointer in the final seconds to even the score at 18.

The Inferno opened the second period on an 8-2 run to take a 26-20 advantage. The closely contested matchup was even until the final 4:13 of the quarter as Redlin got an Alverno rally started with a pair of free throws before a three-point play by Hudson made the score 34-28. Following a Northland layup, Hudson answered with four free throws from the stripe to make the score 39-30. Tessay ended the quarter with a layup late to give Alverno a 43-32 lead at the break.

Madden opened the second half with a layup but the Lumberjills chipped away, taking advantage of several Alverno turnovers before tying the score at 57 with just over two minutes to go in the third. With Northland holding a one-point lead late in the third, the Lumberjills picked up a last-second layup to take a 63-60 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Alverno was able to tie the score at 65 following a jumper by Hudson with 8:13 to go in regulation. A 13-2 lead by the Lumberjills put the game out of reach. Northland led by as many as 17 with 39 seconds to go as Northland won by a 95-78 score.

Alverno (0-2) will be off until Saturday, November 23, when the Inferno take their longest trip of the season to Minnesota and compete against Crown for a 5 p.m. start.
