Box Score MILWAUKEE – On Wednesday the Alverno volleyball season came to an end in a four-set loss to the Rockford Regents inside Reiman Gymnasium. The Regents won the match by the scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21.
Prior to the match Alverno celebrated 'Senior Day' as the team recognized its lone senior Melanie Coffey for her two-year career with the Inferno in a brief on-court ceremony. Coffey had one kill on the night and was also credited with an assisted block in her final collegiate volleyball match.
Leading the offense was freshman Kierra Sherlock with a match-high 12 kills, while junior Neilee Newton had nine kills and classmate Ari Rehberg added eight. Sophomore Alex McMath had a very strong match with a season-best seven kills, while also collecting 29 assists on the night.
Junior Morgan Lemner had a match-high four service aces, while both McMath and sophomore Isabelle Gemza had two aces apiece. Lemner was one of three players to reach multi-digits in digs as she had a team-best 21 digs, while Newton had 11 and Gemza tallied 10 on the night. Freshman Kenzi Kaminski also had one dig on the night.
Alverno took an early lead in the opening set with a 3-0 advantage before Rockford was able to tie the set at three. Rockford took a 13-8 lead before Alverno scored the next four, including a pair of kills by Newton to pull the Inferno back within one. The sides battled closely with one another throughout the remainder of the set before the Regents escaped with a slim 27-25 victory.
The Inferno returned the favor and took the second set by a 25-19 score as the Inferno used a pair of four-point swings to open a 14-6 advantage. Rockford kept the score close through the middle stages of the set before Alverno scored the final four points of the period to even the score at one set apiece.
Rockford took a 6-2 lead in the third set but the Inferno got the score back within one as Rehberg and Coffey combined on block to make it 12-11. Rockford then went on a lengthy run and closed out the set by a 25-16 margin.
After a pair of early runs by both teams to open the fourth set, the score was tied at 10 following an unforced error by the Regents. After Rockford opened up an 18-14 lead, McMath picked up a kill followed by a Lemner ace, Sherlock kill and a Rockford error to even the score once again. After the score was tied at 20, the Regents closed out the set for the 25-21 win.
