MONTGOMERY, Ill. – The Alverno soccer team returned to action on Wednesday evening as the Inferno took on the Spartans of Aurora University and fell by an 8-0 score.
The Inferno held the Spartans to just one goal in the opening 45 minutes but ultimately yielded seven goals in the second half for the eight-goal defeat.
Freshman goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez was in goal once again for the Inferno and recorded her third 20-save game of the season, falling just four saves shy of her season and career-high marks.
Alverno possessed the ball in the opening minutes of the game, but were called offsides just 59 seconds into the match, and then again at the 1:44 mark of the period. The Inferno had two more possessions later in the half where they were called for offsides as the team was unable to get its timing down on offensive possessions.
Trailing by just one at the break, the Inferno allowed two goals through the first five minutes and change of the second stanza. The Spartans added five more goals before Alverno was able to hold its host off the board for the final 20 minutes of the match.
In addition to Bermudez playing all 90 minutes in goal for Alverno, the Inferno also saw senior Mackenzie Mathies, sophomores Angela Chobanian and Shaye Wolfe, as well as freshman Sami Martinez all play the full 90 minutes of the match.
Alverno (4-9, 0-6 NACC) will be back in action at home on Saturday afternoon, when the Inferno host the Marian Sabres for a 1 p.m. start on the Alverno Soccer Field.
