Volleyball Closes Conference Weekend with Matchup at Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. – The Alverno volleyball team wrapped up its weekend in suburban Chicago this weekend taking on the Benedictine Eagles for a Saturday morning matchup and fell to its host by a 3-0 score.

Alverno dropped the sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-19.

Junior Morgan Lemner led the defensive effort for Alverno as she matched her season-high with 16 digs on the match. Lemner also had one of Alverno's 26 assists on the match, while sophomore setter Alex McMath added a match-high 25 for the Inferno.

Freshman Kierra Sherlock had 11 kills to lead the way, while adding nine digs on the defensive effort. Junior Neilee Newton had eight kills, while classmate Ari Rehberg collected six kills on the match. McMath had three of Alverno's four aces, while Rehberg added the fourth.

Rounding out the Inferno box score saw freshman Kenzi Kaminski collect one kills, while sophomore Isabelle Gemza had six digs. Senior Melanie Coffey had one dig on the match.

In a rematch from a match on Saturday, September 7; the Inferno met the Eagles for the second time this season with this one also counting for the NACC standings. The matchup this time around saw the two sides evenly battle in the early going as Alverno led 10-9 on a kill by Newton.

Alverno held an 11-9 lead following an unforced error by the Eagles but Benedictine fought back for five unanswered points to wrestle the lead back at 14-11. Alverno got service back behind a kill by Sherlock to trim the deficit to 19-14 before an error by Benedictine and an ace by Alverno pulled the Inferno back within three at 19-16. The Eagles recorded the final six points of the set to win 25-16.

Alverno opened the second set with a 1-0 lead as Newton collected a kill off a pass from McMath. The score was tied numerous times in the opening stages of the second set at two, four, five, and six before the Eagles scored three unanswered to take a 9-6 lead. After a point by the Inferno, Benedictine went on a 9-3 run before closing out the set 25-13.

In the third it was once again close in the early-going with the score tied at five before Alverno registered the next two points to take a 7-5 advantage behind an ace by McMath and a kill by Sherlock. The set remained close as the sides exchanged points until the set was tied at 14 before Benedictine scored the next six points unanswered. The two sides split the final 10 points of the set, but following the six-point run by the Eagles prior it put the set out of reach.

Alverno (1-20, 0-8 NACC) return home for its next four matches beginning on Tuesday, when Alverno plays its final non-conference match of the season against Lake Forest beginning at 7 p.m. from inside Reiman Gymnasium.
