Alverno Plays Strong Defensive Game against Dominican as Bermudez Stops 13

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team hosted preseason favorite Dominican on Thursday afternoon in a weather make-up game following the torrential rains last week. Alverno dropped the decision by a 7-0 score to the Stars.

The Inferno result against the Stars was the best finish against Dominican since the 2016 season, when the Inferno fell by an identical score in the first season for Alverno under head coach Lisa Waltz.

Alverno played with a defensive mindset against the league's second-leading offense, and held the Stars to just two goals in the opening half before yielding five tallies in the second half.

In goal, freshman Kenzie Bermudez denied 13 shots sent her way including several second-half diving stops to keep the Star offense at bay.

While Dominican's offense was able to muster 40 shots on the match, only 20 were on frame with Bermudez making the 13 saves. Alverno's defensive unit helped force many of the off-target shots as sophomores Shaye Wolfe and Angela Chobanian along with senior Mackenzie Mathies and freshman Sami Martinez played key roles on the back line.

Also playing a role in the midfield line was junior Alexandra Donowa, sophomore Ziri Hernandez-Bustos, and freshmen Andy Lopez, Faith Josko, Katie Shipley; while freshman Sasha Sliwinski played a role up front and had a few near break chances against the Dominican defense.

Alverno (4-8-0, 0-5-0 NACC) will resume NACC play on Saturday afternoon, when the team takes on crosstown foe MSOE for a 12 p.m. start on the Alverno Soccer Field.
