Eagles Outhit Inferno In NACC Opener

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College lost its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener 3-0 to visiting Benedictine University Tuesday evening in Reiman Gymnasium.

"We struggled a little bit on our passing, we struggled a bit to execute at times, which is something a young team does," Alverno Interim Head Coach Susan Peterson said. "The coaches sensed early that we weren't playing as aggressive as we have been -- we were timid out there. It was a little frustrating for it to happen tonight."

The Inferno (2-7, 0-1 NACC) led 10-6 in the opening set, but after an Eagles' timeout, the score swung in favor of the visitors as Benedictine closed out the first 25-21. The Eagles (5-4, 1-0) slightly outhit Alverno, .121 to .100 in the first, which proved enough to take the win.

As Benedictine's attack percentage went up the second and the third sets -- .286 and .310 -- the Inferno's went down -- .038 and -.120. The Eagles won the second 25-18 and third 25-14 for the sweep.

Melissa Weyand led the Alverno attack with six kills on a .200 clip, while Alyssa Reinke had eight digs to lead the defense.

Next up for the Inferno is a NACC match at Rockford University Thursday at 7 p.m.
