Box Score 2 RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- After dropping the opening game of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader to host Concordia University Chicago, Alverno College came out on the winning end of game two to earn the split Saturday afternoon.
The host Cougars (4-13, 3-3 NACC) won the opener 8-0, before the Inferno (14-8, 4-4) took the nightcap 5-1.
In Alverno's game-two victory, Kristin Holub reached base by a hit-by-pitch to lead off the fourth and would eventually score when Sarah Brumett laced a single to right field to break the scoreless tie.
Ashlie Rossi singled to left in the fifth to plate Sam Kasprzak and Alexis Botsford to give the Inferno a 3-0 lead before the Cougars got one back in the bottom of the inning.
Stephanie Skibba scored on a Concordia error in the seventh before Megan Rossi scored Holub for the four-run cushion.
Olivia Schneider (7-3) scattered six hits and struck out three in the complete-game victory, while Alicia Salata (0-7) was tagged for the loss in five innings of work.
Alverno couldn't quite get the bats going in the opener, connecting for just three hits against the Cougars' Meghan Johnson (3-3).
Holub garnered two of the Inferno hits in three at bats, while Mary Kate Sulikowski was 1-for-2.
Erin Dulek (6-4) was chased after four innings allowing four runs on seven hits in the loss.
Next up for Alverno is a conference doubleheader versus Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday 3 p.m. at Alverno Field.
