Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Alverno College freshman Olivia Schneider pitched a no-hitter in her collegiate pitching debut as the Inferno bounced back from an opening-game loss to earn a split on opening day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Inferno lost the opener, 4-0, to Bridgewater State University and defeated Mount Mary University, 8-0, in the nightcap.
Schneider's near-perfect game included 12 strikeouts and just one walk, caught by fellow freshman Mary Kate Sulikowski behind the plate.
The Blue Angels' (1-1) Nicole Weggen drew the two-out base on balls in the bottom of the fourth inning for the only blemish against the rookie southpaw.
It was just the third no-hitter in school history and first since Alverno Hall of Famer Jessica Goetz' tossed her second during the 2009 season.
Alexis Botsford led Alverno (2-2) with two hits in the victory, while Sarah Brumett had a team-high two RBIs. Schneider had the first extra-base hit of the season with a double in the top of the fourth.
Alverno allowed just four hits against BSU (1-0), but managed only one of their own which stranded six runners on base.
Sam Kasprzak singled to left field in the fifth to break up the Bears' no-hit bid.
Erin Dulek had five Ks in 5.1 innings of work for the Inferno, but was tagged for loss after allowing just two hits through the first five frames.
Alverno heads out to Cape Coral for tomorrow's games versus Kenyon College and Nazareth College. First pitch against Kenyon is set for 9 a.m. ET.
