Box Score 2 EUREKA, Ill. -- Alverno College's five-game win streak was snapped in a 2-0 opening-game loss to host Eureka College, but the Inferno won the nightcap 3-1 to earn the doubleheader split with the Red Devils Sunday afternoon.
The Inferno outhit the hosts 8-4 in the opener, but left 10 on base and was shut out for the third time this season.
Kristin Holub connected for two hits and Ashlie Rossi was 3-for-4 for Alverno, but Kim Lamar's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth put the only runs on the board for the Red Devils (3-8).
Erin Dulek (3-2) had nine strikeouts in the complete-game loss, while Saman Vique (2-2) picked up the shutout win.
Alverno managed just three hits in the nightcap, but took advantage of five Eureka errors for three unearned runs.
Stephanie Skibba led off the top of the two-run sixth with a single to left center, and each of the six Inferno batters of the inning put the ball in play leading to scores by Skibba and Holub which put the visitors ahead 2-1.
A leadoff walk by Mary Kate Sulikowski came around to score after another error by the Red Devils in the seventh.
Olivia Schneider (4-1) fanned six batters, scattered six hits and walked just one in the complete-game win, while Kali George (2-6) was tagged for the loss.
Next up for the 8-4 Inferno is a short trip across the county border to Carroll University for a Tuesday doubleheader at 3 p.m. in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
