Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Megan Rossi hit the first home run of the season for Alverno College as the Inferno topped the University of Minnesota-Morris, 6-2, Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Inferno (3-3) lost this morning's opening game to Bethany Lutheran College, 1-0, earning a split for the third day on the spring trip.
Rossi's homer to left-center field was the second run of the first inning, after Kristin Holub knocked home Alexis Botsford the previous play.
Sarah Brumett scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the second to make it 3-1, and Holub added a fourth score in the third.
Jillian Batty drew a walk with the bases loaded and Stephanie Skibba singled through the left side to plate Mary Kate Sulikowski in the sixth to cap off the Inferno's scorning.
The Cougars (1-7) got one back in bottom half of the inning, but rookie hurler Ashlie Rossi (1-1) went the distance to earn her first college win in the circle, as she scattered six hits and struck out four.
Fellow freshman Olivia Schneider (1-1) pitched a gem against the Vikings (2-1) as she nearly recorded her second no-hitter in as many starts, but Bethany Lutheran's lone hit came with one out in the bottom of the seventh which knocked home the walk-off game-winning run.
The Vikings' base runner reached on a dropped popup that was right along the left-field line and was nearly a foul ball.
Alverno had just three hits in the contest and stranded six runners.
Wednesday the Inferno returns to the Cape Coral Sports Complex for the final two games of the spring trip versus Elms College at 9, and New Jersey City University at 11 a.m. ET.
