Inferno Rallies Back For First League Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- A two-run sixth inning gave Alverno College a 6-5 victory over visiting Concordia University Chicago in the second game of a doubleheader for the Inferno's first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Alverno Field.

The Cougars (5-11, 2-4 NACC) won the opening game, 9-4, over the host Inferno (6-13, 1-5).

Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth inning in game two, the Inferno's Raquel Starke reached with a leadoff single and advanced to second with a stolen base. Alexis Botsford followed with a single to right field, which pushed Starke to third.

Stephanie Skibba took a called first strike but Botsford broke for second base and drew the throw from the Cougars' catcher, which allowed Starke to begin her steal attempt for home plate. The pitcher cut off the throw short of second and hurled it home, but Starke beat the throw for the successful double steal to tie the game.

Skibba advanced Botsford to third on a fielder's choice, and Emily Ortner plated the rookie on a base hit to right field for the go-ahead run, which would be the game winner.

Erin Dulek retired the Cougars in order in the top of the seventh, which included a pair of called strikeouts to end the game.

Dulek (4-8) earned the victory in 4.1 innings of relief work, as the junior right-hander allowed just one run on two hits and struck out six.

Andrea Kelly (0-3) went 3.2 innings of relief for the Cougars allowing the pair of runs in the sixth for the loss.

Concordia Chicago scored four runs in the third for the game's first lead, before the Inferno answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Ortner knocked home Botsford for Alverno's first run, followed by Ashleigh Sagat's second home run of the season, a two-run blast to right-center field.

Kristin Holub recorded a third-straight hit on a double to left, and two batters later Megan Rossi scored Holub on a base hit to center.

A pair of hits in the fourth allowed the Cougars to regain the lead before the Inferno rallied back with a pair of runs in the sixth.

In the opener, the Cougars had just two more hits than the Inferno, 11 to 9, but scored nine runs for the victory while the Inferno left eight on base.

Holub had a pair of RBIs on her double, while Skibba and Sam Kasprzak recorded the other RBIs for the Inferno.

Dulek was tagged with the game-one loss as she allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, two walks and had a strikeout in 4.0 innings of work.

Rossi allowed just one hit and recorded a strikeout in 3.0 innings of relief.

Meghan Johnson earned the victory going 6.0 innings with a pair of Ks for the Cougars.

Alverno hits the road for a morning doubleheader at Dominican University tomorrow. The 11 a.m. NACC series will be hosted at Chicago Bandits Stadium in Rosemont, Ill.
