MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College was held to just a single run as it was on the losing end of a nonconference doubleheader sweep by visiting Cardinal Stritch University Wednesday afternoon at Alverno Field.

The Inferno (5-12) trailed 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning before Alexis Botsford scored on an Emily Ortner single to right field. Botsford reached earlier in the inning on her second infield hit of the opening game.

However, that was the only Inferno score of the day as the host team struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Wolves (16-13) added two more runs in the sixth for the 9-1 final in six innings.

Alverno had just five hits in the opener and left eight on base, while Stritch connected for 14 hits versus hurler Erin Dulek (3-7), who was tagged with the loss in the complete game effort.

Shannon Caliri fanned 10 Inferno batters in the complete game victory for the Wolves.

In the nightcap, Stritch scored three runs in the first and five in the third inning for the only scoring in the 8-0 five-inning decision. Just three of the eight runs were earned due to a pair of Inferno errors.

Alverno had just four hits in the contest, while the Wolves had seven off pitcher Megan Rossi (2-5) who was tagged with the loss.

Tori Burke (5-7) allowed just two hits in three innings pitched and picked up the win for the Wolves.

Botsford, Ashleigh Sagat and Bre Hart were the only Alverno batters to record hits in each game of the doubleheader.

The Inferno completes its current eight-game homestand with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twin bill on Saturday versus Concordia University Chicago. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
