Walk-off Win Earns Split With Sabres

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- It took two extra innings, but Alverno College rallied for a 6-5 walk-off win over visiting Marian University in game one of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Alverno Field.

The Inferno (8-21, 3-11 NACC) lost 5-2 in a darkness-shortened game two which was called after six innings of play for a series split with the Sabres (10-16, 7-5).

The Inferno's walk-off victory came in the bottom of the ninth after Megan Rossi came around the bases to score after a leadoff walk.

Rossi advanced over to second base on a perfectly laid sacrifice bunt by Sam Kasprzak, and Raquel Starke hit a 1-2 pitch back to the circle where the Sabres' Emily Gorges overthrew first base that allowed Rossi to round third walk across home plate for the extra-innings win.

Both starting pitchers went the distance, as Gorges (4-11) had five Ks, five walks and allowed three earned runs on 11 hits in the loss, while Alverno's Erin Dulek (6-12) allowed three earned runs on 12 hits and a walk.

Dulek had seven strikeouts in the win, and eclipsed 100 on the season for the first time in her 3-year career. The junior right-hander had 99 Ks her rookie year, and 68 in an injury-shortened sophomore season. The 100-strikeout milestone has been accomplished just three times prior in Alverno history, all by Hall-of-Famer Jessica Goetz who had 139 in 2008, 174 in 2009 and 237 in 2010.

Starke, Stephanie Skibba and Emily Ortner all recorded RIBs in the victory, while Ashleigh Sagat tallied three hits in five at bats. Ortner and Rossi each earned a multi-hit game as well with two apiece.

In the nightcap, the Sabres got out to a quick lead with four runs on five hits and an Inferno error in the first inning.

The Inferno got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI-single by Sagat, but the Sabres returned the favor with one run in the third.

Ortner's one-out base hit in the sixth came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches, but that would be the final score of the game as daylight ended the game prematurely.

As in the opener, both starting pitchers earned complete games. Rossi (2-9) picked up the loss as she allowed three earned runs on 11 hits and had three strikeouts, while just one of Heather Dorn's (6-5) runs allowed was earned as she recorded three Ks as well.

Alverno hits the road for a NACC series at Edgewood College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
