Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- A five-game skid for Alverno College ended in convincing fashion Tuesday afternoon as the host Inferno blasted Maranatha Baptist University by scores of 26-0 and 24-0 in a nonconference doubleheader at Alverno Field. Both contests ended after five innings due to the run rule.
The offense erupted for 50 runs on 35 hits in the twin bill, while the Inferno pitching staff also had a stellar day. Junior right-handers Erin Dulek (3-6) and Megan Rossi (2-4) both recorded complete-game shutouts versus Alverno's former conference foe.
Dulek struck out nine batters, walked none, and allowed just three hits for her fifth career shutout--third of the season--while Rossi fanned four, walked one and allowed just four hits in her second shutout of her career and season.
Both hurlers we efficient as it took Dulek 68 pitches to retire the Crusaders in game one, and Rossi needed just 58, despite three Inferno errors, in the nightcap.
Emily Ortner led the way at the plate with seven hits, seven runs and eight RBIs in eight at bats, including her first-career grand slam in the opener. The sophomore's second home run of the season was a shot to left-center field which capped off a 15-run second inning.
Ashleigh Sagat had just two hits in the series, but connected for her 12th career home run in the second game, a three-run blast to center field. The senior outfielder also scored six runs and knocked in four.
Bre Hart and Alexis Botsford each had five hits in the doubleheader, Rossi and Kristin Holub had four apiece, while Jillian Batty was 3-for-3 with a walk in four plate appearances.
Maranatha's Rosa Lewis (1-3) was tagged with the loss in game one--though just five of the runs allowed were earned due to nine Crusader errors--and Samantha Swiatek (0-3) picked up the game-two loss as the Crusaders fell to 1-6 on the season.
Alverno (5-10) returns to the home diamond tomorrow for another non-league series. The Inferno hosts crosstown foe Cardinal Stritch University at 3 p.m.
