Inferno Swept In Home Opener Despite 22 Hits

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- Eleven hits in each game of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader were not enough to propel Alverno College to its first league victory of the season as the host Inferno was swept by Wisconsin Lutheran College, 12-3 and 9-5, at a sunny Alverno Field in the 2014 home opener.

The Warriors (8-6, 3-1 NACC) opened the twin bill by scoring four runs in the first inning and tacked on more scores in the third, fifth and sixth innings on 16 hits, which included four home runs.

Megan Rossi scored Alexis Botsford on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third for the Inferno's first run of the game.

Back-to-back doubles by Emily Ortner and Ashleigh Sagat to begin the home half of the fifth plated another Alverno run, and the Warriors' lone error of the game later in the inning gave the Inferno (3-10, 0-4) its final score of the opening contest before the Warriors countered with four in the sixth.

Ortner and Sagat had three hits apiece to lead the Inferno offense, while Botsford Stephanie Skibba tallied two hits each.

Tara Degl'Innocenti and Emily Sievert each hit two homers to lead the Warriors in the batter's box.

WLC kept its hot hitting going to begin game two with three hits in the first, but a double play by Botsford at shortstop kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the opening frame.

Alverno marked the first score of the game in the bottom half after Botsford's leadoff single came around to score on Sagat's fielder's choice to third base.

Yet the Warriors responded with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and four more in the sixth off 13 total hits, while the Inferno added a single run in the fifth on a Sagat double.

A late seventh inning rally by Alverno tacked on three runs, but wasn't enough to concern the Warriors.

Skibba scored the first of three final tallies on Rossi's second sacrifice fly of the day, a Kristin Holub double to left field sent home Ortner and Sagat with one out, but the Warriors Kendra Thomas (8-3) retired the final two batters for her second complete-game victory of the day.

Botsford, Holub and Sagat led Alverno with two hits apiece, while Brittney Blazich went 4-for-4 to lead WLC.

Both Inferno pitchers hurled complete games as Erin Dulek (2-6) picked up the game-one loss with six strikeouts, and Rossi (1-4) was tagged with the game-two loss--though all nine of the runs allowed were unearned due to five Alverno errors.

Alverno continues its current homestand with three more doubleheaders this week at Alverno Field. Next up is Maranatha Baptist University for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
