Box Score MEQUON, Wis. -- Visiting Alverno College won its seventh-straight game, and second-straight in overtime, 74-64 over No. 2 seed Concordia University Wisconsin in the semifinal round of the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
The third-seeded Inferno (19-8) advances to the NACC tournament final on Saturday versus top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College (23-3) who held off No. 4 Edgewood College, 72-55, in the other semifinal.
"Holy cow, what a heavyweight fight tonight," Alverno Head Coach Brad Duckworth said about the third matchup this season against the host Falcons (22-5) that saw nine ties and six lead changes.
Alverno took the lead with 2 minutes left in the first half and held on for a 33-29 advantage at intermission. The lead was increased to nine on a Kristen Speerschneider 3-pointer at the 15-minute mark in the second half, and the Inferno remained in front until the Falcons' Katie Luethe made a 3 of her own with 6 minutes left in regulation to tie things up at 52-52.
CUW took its first lead since the first half on a Tori Riechers' jumper with 3:44 left, and the Falcons' fifth 3-pointer of the half put the hosts up four with just 49 ticks left.
Jamie Hoernke would cut the deficit to 61-59 on the next possession, and the Falcons made one of two free throws to put the spread back to three before Devon Gorman scored the final three points of regulation.
Gorman drove to the hoop and scored with 18 seconds left, and after a quick foul, the Falcons returned to the free throw line. CUW missed the bonus free-throw attempt, Mollie Mikyska hauled in the rebound, which was quickly pushed up court, and Gorman was fouled on a drive to the hoop with 10 seconds left.
The senior forward missed the first, and after a Falcon timeout, sank the second and game-tying attempt.
"Devon made a great play to the rim," Duckworth said. "How much courage she has--with her season, her career on the line--she steps up and makes it. We get a stop and rebound and we head to OT. That's major basketball right there. That's guts."
The Inferno scored the first six points of the extra period, and allowed just a pair of Falcon free throws before scoring the final six points of the game.
"We got to overtime, and I told them that we've played nine overtime periods in six games. We play a 5-minute game. We had learned a lesson from the first time we were here," said Duckworth.
In the first meeting of the season at Buuck Field House, the Falcons dominated the overtime period, 13-3, but tonight's postseason meeting went in the Inferno's favor, 12-2.
Alverno leads the nation with six overtime games, including Saturday's quarterfinal victory over MSOE.
"We wouldn't do it any other way, that's what we do," added Duckworth.
Hoernke led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the foul line, Gorman shot 8-of-9 from the field for 23 and Ashley Berry added 12. Mikyska added 10 points and corralled a game and career-high 16 rebounds for her third double-double in her eighth career start.
Luethe led the Falcons with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Inferno heads to Wisconsin Lutheran for Saturday's tournament final at 2 p.m., with a trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on the line. The crosstown foes split the season series, and each teams' last loss was against the other.
Alverno has won seven straight since a 68-60 setback at Wisconsin Lutheran on Feb. 1, while the Warriors have won 22 straight since the Inferno won 73-70 on Nov. 30 in Reiman Gymnasium.
"We'll go in [to Wisconsin Lutheran] Saturday afternoon and see what we're made of. The season's not done. We can't be content with tonight. We've got more work to do," Duckworth said.
