Alverno Caps Off Senior Night With School Record 17th Victory

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Senior Night for Alverno College proved to be even more special as the Inferno downed visiting Aurora University 60-55 for a school record 17th victory in the regular-season finale.

The Inferno (17-8, 14-6 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) surpassed the previous record mark of 16 wins set last season, and bested the school record for conference wins by one as well.

"Alverno is a place you can win," said Alverno Head Coach Brad Duckworth. "It was a really, really good regular season. Anytime you are in the 17 or 18 win range, you're one of the better teams. I'm really proud for Alverno."

Senior forwards Devon Gorman and Jamie Hoernke led the Inferno offensive attack with 18 and 14 points, while their fellow seniors on the perimeter, Ashley Berry and Kristen Speerschneider, added eight and five.

Rookies Mollie Mikyska and Tessa Mersberger rounded out the Alverno scoring with eight and seven points, and Mikyska led the team with nine rebounds.

After a season-high 24 turnovers on Saturday, the Inferno responded with a season-low seven tonight.

Alverno took a 10-8 lead on a Speerschneider 3-pointer with 14 minutes, 40 seconds to play in the opening half and remained ahead the rest of the contest.

The hosts were up by as many as 14 points before the Spartans (12-13, 11-9 NACC) cut the spread to 44-41 with just under 5 minutes to play.

Alverno answered with a Gorman layup, and after a pair of Spartan free throws, Gorman connected for a 3 to extend the lead back to six. The senior forward scored 14 of the Inferno's final 16 points in the final 4:31 that kept the Spartans at bay.

Shannon Koski led Aurora with a game-high 21 points, while Shay Jenkins added 17 and Anna Roszkowski pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

The fifth-straight win puts the Inferno's home record at a NACC-best 11-1 on the season. The Inferno, which earned the No. 3 seed in the NACC tournament, will host No. 6 Milwaukee School of Engineering in a quarterfinal on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The postseason home game is Alverno's first since hosting the No. 8/9 opening-round game of the 2006 Lake Michigan Conference Tournament, and just second in program history. The Inferno is 0-4 all-time in postseason action, 0-2 in the NACC tournament.

"It's so important to be at home," said Duckworth. "We've been pretty darn good in [Reiman Gymnasium] and we've had some great games with MSOE this year--a double-overtime game at their place--so Saturday should be a pretty fun time."
