Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Solid defense and a commanding 54-29 rebounding advantage helped Alverno College clip visiting Concordia University Wisconsin, 47-45, Saturday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Inferno won its fourth-straight game, improved to 16-8 (13-6 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) and tied the school wins record with one regular-season game to play next Tuesday.
Alverno's defense limited Concordia Wisconsin to under 27 percent shooting and under 14 percent from the 3-point arc.
Mollie Mikyska recorded her second double-double in the last three games with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The rookie center shot 5-of-9 in her fifth-career start for the Inferno.
Devon Gorman also got her second double-double in the last three contests as she led all scorers with 13 points and tracked down 10 rebounds. The senior forward led all with six assists while adding a pair of steals.
The Falcons (20-4, 16-3 NACC) had their four-game win streak snapped and were led by Katie Luethe's 12 points and five rebounds, while Madelyn Landgraf added 11 points.
Alverno trailed by two just 5 minutes into play, but used a 12-0 run to take a 17-7 lead and would not trail the rest of the game.
A Katie Bartlett layup with 4 minutes remaining in the first half gave the Inferno its largest lead of the game at 11, before the Falcons closed the gap to 26-17 just before intermission.
Concordia Wisconsin slowly but surely chiseled at Alverno's lead and tied the game at 36-36 with 8:47 left to play. Although the Inferno never let the Falcons get ahead despite a repeated second-half tie with 1:57 left.
Gorman made 1-of-2 free throws at the 1:30-mark, and after two missed shots by the Falcons, she again went 1-of-2 with 19 seconds to play for a two-point Alverno advantage.
The Inferno defense held for the fourth-consecutive possession as the Falcons' final shot was off the mark as time expired.
Alverno has already clinched a spot in the NACC tournament, but can secure a first-round home game with a victory on Tuesday, or an Edgewood College victory over Benedictine University on Sunday.
Aurora University visits Reiman Gymnasium on Tuesday in the regular-season finale. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
