Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Alverno College concluded its 2014 season with a thrilling 3-1 victory over host Concordia University Chicago Saturday night in Geiseman Gymnasium.

Alverno (10-17, 1-10 NACC) trailed 24-22 in the opening set, but after a quick timeout, Chelsey Powless found Cali Trepp for a kill and a Cougar error followed to tie it up 24-24. The Cougars (5-23, 2-9 NACC) lost the lead on another error, while Emily Ortner and Jessica Wewers combined for the set-point block for the Inferno.

Concordia Chicago broke a 12-12 tie in the second with four-straight points and remained ahead the rest of the set to tie the match at one set apiece. Alverno had a match-high six attack errors in the frame.

The finish of the third set was much like the opener. The Inferno trailed 23-21, tied the set at 25-25, though after a Cougar error gave the Inferno the lead, Ortner ended the set with a service ace.

Alverno cruising to a 24-14 set in the fourth, but the Cougars still had some fight in them and rattled off five-consecutive with match point on the line before Ortner finished it off with her team-high 14th kill of the contest.

Trepp added 13 kills and 12 digs in the final match of her four-year career, and joined Ortner (13 digs) with a double-double in the season finale. Trepp set the school record for most matches played with 111 in her career.

Powless put up a season-best 37 assists to lead the Inferno to a .195 attack percentage.

Defensively, Danielle Schilawski had a team-best 22 digs for her seventh-straight game with double-digit digs, while Wewers and Melissa Weyand added five blocks apiece. Wewers set the single-season school record with 64 total blocks, breaking Katherine Lemke's former mark of 59 set in 2004.
