Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Ashley Berry scored 15 of her career-high 19 points in the second half as Alverno College rallied back from a 13-point deficit to defeat visiting Marian University 78-66 Tuesday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
Devon Gorman tied Berry's 19 points for game-high honors, Jamie Hoernke scored 16 and Anna Boteva added 15--including a four-point play to pull Alverno within two--for the comeback victory.
The Inferno (9-5, 6-3 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) trailed 39-26 with 1:26 left to play in the first half before Gorman scored the final points of the half to cut the Sabres' lead to 11 at the break.
In the first half, Marian (3-9, 3-4 NACC) made 54 percent shots--including 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc--was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line and forced the Inferno into 12 turnovers.
"We had no fire, no commitment to energy, no commitment to the scouting report," Alverno Head Coach Brad Duckworth said about the first half. "But I'm certainly happy we got to where we got in the second half."
The Inferno turned the tables in the final period, shooting 54 percent from the field, 4-of-6 from the 3-point arc, 18-of-25 from the free-throw line and committed just a single second-half turnover.
"I proud of the team for responding to a very challenging halftime conversation," added Duckworth.
Berry added a game-best 10 rebounds nearly had a triple-double with eight assists.
However, the Inferno's all-time assists leader, Kristen Speerschneider, outdid her teammate in the passing ranks by breaking the single-game school record with 11 assists on the night. The previous record of nine was accomplished on five different occasions, though Speerschneider's previous career-best was seven, which she did nine times.
"Speerschneider--11 assists to one turnover--that's a big time college basketball game," Duckworth said.
Alverno took the lead for the first time in the second half on a pair of Hoernke free throws with 10 minutes to go and didn't relinquish the advantage the rest of the game.
Sarah Albert made 5-of-8 shots including 3-of-5 3-pointers to lead the Sabres with 16 points, while Sarah Olewinski added 14, Dani Huray 12 and Amelia Mirsburger had 10.
The Sabres were held to 25 percent shooting and were just 1-of-10 from the arc in the second half.
Alverno plays next at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday evening. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. downtown at the Kern Center.
