Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- A brief glimpse of the stats and the difference is easy to spot. Visiting Alverno College made just 53 percent of its free throws in an 86-74 double-overtime loss, while Marian University connected on 94 percent of its trips to the foul line.
The host Sabres (4-14, 4-9 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) scored the first eight points of the second overtime period and maintained at least a two-possession lead the rest of the frame to halt the Inferno's win streak at four while concurrently snapping their own nine-game skid.
With 2 minutes, 28 seconds left in regulation Devon Gorman sank a 3-point shot to give the Inferno a 55-53 lead. The teams would exchange defensive stops until the Sabres' Emma Jarvey was fouled with 1:26 to go and made both free throws to even up the score at 55-55.
Each team tallied a turnover and a missed shot in the final 86 seconds sending the game to overtime.
Marian went up 65-60 after a pair of free throws before Gorman countered with the final five points of the extra frame including game-tying triple with 44 seconds left.
Just as at the end of regulation, each team would get a chance for a go-ahead hoop, but neither could convert as the game went to the second overtime where the Sabres outscored the Inferno 21-9.
Kristen Speerschneider scored 14 points to join Gorman's team-high 20 as the only Inferno players in double-figures. Ashley Berry--who had a game-high eight assists--and Tessa Mersberger scored nine points apiece, Katie Bartlett had eight while Mollie Mikyska and Jamie Hoernke added seven each.
Amelia Mirsberger led one of four Sabres in double-digits with a game-high 21 points and Sarah Olewinski added 19.
Marian was 29-of-31 from the free-throw line, which included a perfect 15-of-15 in the two overtime periods, while Alverno was 17-of-32 for the contest.
Alverno (12-6, 9-4 NACC) held a slight 44-41 advantage in rebounds led by Mikyska's game-high 12 and Gorman's 10.
The Inferno returns home to Reiman Gymnasium for a NACC contests versus Benedictine University this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
