Box Score MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College defense limited visiting Concordia University Chicago to its season-low point total in a 75-33 drubbing Tuesday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Inferno held the Cougars (0-16, 0-13 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) to just 25.5 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers, led by Kristen Speerschneider game-high six steals that propelled her into the top spot in the Alverno record book.
Entering tonight's game Speerschneider trialed Lisa Sorgi ('10), also a current assistant coach on the team, by one steal on the all-time steals list, and surpassed her with her second takeaway of the night with just under 9 minutes remaining in the first half. The senior point guard's total is now at 194 career steals, currently tied for 11th all-time in conference history.
Jamie Hoernke tallied her second-consecutive double-double, and sixth of the season, with game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, as she shot an astounding 7-of-9 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Devon Gorman and Ashley Berry added 14 points apiece, while Speerschneider had seven, and rookies Tessa Mersberger and Mollie Mikyska added six. Mersberger scored all six on a pair of 3-pointers in her first-career start.
Alverno (12-5, 9-3 NACC) shot under 38 percent in the first half, but it was enough for a 35-14 halftime lead. The host team improved to 45.5 percent in the second half and posted 20 assists on the night. Berry, Speerschneider and Katie Bartlett tied for game-high honors with four assists each.
The Cougars, whose previous season-low was 36 at Concordia Wisconsin just 2 weeks ago, were led by April Broska's nine points and Angelik Youg's 10 rebounds.
The Inferno takes its current four-game winning streak to Marian University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff. Alverno defeated the Sabres 78-66 back on Jan. 7 in Milwaukee.
