Inferno Bats Stay Ablaze In Sweep Of Sabres

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College bats remained hot in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader with visiting Marian University, as the Inferno connected for 22 hits and five home runs in a 6-5 and 9-5 sweep of the Sabres.

Just a day prior, the Inferno (10-6, 4-4 NAC) posted 19 hits and three homers in a series split with visiting Edgewood College. Both series were scheduled to be played at Alverno's opponents' sites, but field conditions relocated the games to Alverno Field, where the new host team batted first.

The Sabres (3-15, 1-5) led game one 4-0 heading into the sixth inning, before Alverno tied things up on a pair of two-run home runs by Stef Wilmore and Megan Rossi.

An Alverno throwing error allowed Marian to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Rossi, who pitched 2.2 innings of relief for the win, struck the next batter to end the inning and limit the damage.

Down to the team's final strike, Emily Ortner hit a two-out single to center field to bring up the NAC's leading hitter to the plate. Wilmore then belted her second home run of the game, which gave the Inferno the one-run lead.

Rossi stranded two Marian runners in the seventh to secure the Inferno's first victory over the Sabres since 2004.

Emily Gorges (2-11) pitched the full seven innings and was tabbed with the loss, but struck out six and walked just one.

Alverno took the first lead in game two as three-consecutive RBIs by Sam Kasprzak, Stephanie Skibba and Jamie Villalobos put the Inferno up 3-0 in the second inning.

Ashleigh Sagat added a pair of runs to the lead on a two-run homer to left-center field and chased the Sabres' starter, Brooke Koechell (1-4) in the third.

The Sabres finally scored in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run blast by Emilie Jansen, but Sagat answered with her second home run of the game -- and second grand slam in two days -- to push the cushion to 9-3.

Two more runs were all the visitors could muster, as Villalobos pitched the final three innings with a pair of strikeouts for her second save of the season. Rossi's (3-2) final line included a pair of earned runs, three Ks and just one walk as she earned her second victory of the day.

Rossi reached base on three walks and extended her on-base streak to 14 games, while a bloop single by Wilmore extended her hitting-streak to 14 games, as well.

Alverno takes a break from league play on Tuesday as it hosts Lawrence University in a nonconference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
