Inferno Splits Slugfest With Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- Stef Wilmore had the first multi-home run game of her career and Ashleigh Sagat belted her first-career grand slam as Alverno College split with visiting Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader.

The host Inferno won the opener 9-6, while the Eagles took game two 10-7.The teams took advantage of a stiff wind that blew out to left field and combined for six home runs -- three apiece -- and 45 hits in the two-game series.

Wilmore opened the scoring in game one as she blasted a two-run homer to center field in the top of the first. Just two innings later, the senior catcher hit a solo shot to left field to keep the Inferno in front 3-1.

Edgewood's Lindsey Elsing homered in the fourth inning, and after a two-out Inferno error, the Eagles added four more scores for the 6-3 lead.

Wilmore and Sagat both had RBI-singles in the fifth to pull within one run of the Eagles, and Sagat's grand slam in the sixth put the Inferno ahead for good.

Megan Rossi picked up the win after pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Jamie Villalobos recorded the save as she reentered the pitchers circle with no outs and the bases loaded in the seventh. Villalobos struck out the first batter faced in the final frame and the second batter hit into a game-ending double play.

Charlie Leikness (1-6) pitched five innings and allowed seven runs in the loss.

In game two the Inferno scored three runs in the top of the first on RBI-hits by Wilmore and Lauren Colette, but the Eagles answered with four in the bottom half, which included a two-run homer by Jessica Spitzer, her first of two in the game.

Edgewood (5-15, 3-1 NAC) led 10-3 after four innings, before the Inferno (8-6, 2-4) mounted a comeback in the seventh. Rossi and Colette added RBI-hits and another Inferno run scored on a wild pitch to put Alverno within three runs of the lead, but the hosts were unable to continue the final-inning rally.

Rossi (1-2) was tagged with the loss after three innings of work for a split on the day, while Rachel DeJongh (3-5) got the win for Edgewood.

Alverno will play its third doubleheader in four days up at Marian University tomorrow at noon.
