Box Score 2 AURORA, Ill. -- League-leading Aurora University swept visiting Alverno College today, 9-1 and 9-3, in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader putting the Inferno's overall record below .500 for the first time this season, but Stef Wilmore hit three doubles to move atop the NAC's all-time list.
Emily Ortner provided Alverno's only run in the opening game with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the top of the third inning for a brief 1-0 lead, but the Spartans (27-3, 19-1 NAC) responded with consecutive four-run innings.
The Inferno (12-14, 4-12) left seven runners on base and committed three errors in the loss, while the Spartans scored their nine runs on 13 hits.
Natalie Zanella (15-0) recorded seven strikeouts for the complete-game victory, while Alverno starter Jamie Villalobos (6-8) was tagged with the loss in three innings of work.
In the nightcap, Alverno broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third as back-to-back doubles by Ortner and Wilmore plated a pair of runs. Wilmore's first double of the game, and second of three on the night, moved her past Benedictine University's Cassie Cappetto (2008-11) for the top spot on the NAC's all-time doubles list. Her final two-bagger in the seventh inning puts her at 51 career doubles.
Aurora scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added six runs over the fifth and sixth innings for the 9-2 advantage. Alverno got a run back in the seventh on an Ashleigh Sagat RBI-single, but the team left the bases loaded in its final at bat. The Inferno left 11 runners stranded in the game.
Erin Dulek (2-3) picked up the loss in 5.2 innings pitched, while Vanessa Hartzell (9-2) earned the victory.
Ortner and Wilmore led Alverno with four hits apiece in the series.
Alverno looks to snap its six-game skid with a doubleheader versus visiting Rockford College on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Alverno Field.
