Box Score 2 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- After dropping the opening game, 4-1, Alverno College earned a doubleheader split versus host Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a 13-11 victory in game two by scoring eight runs in the final inning.
In the opener, the Inferno offense managed just a pair of hits, which included a lead-off double by Ashleigh Sagat in the fourth and Stef Wilmore's solo home run to deep center field in the top of the seventh -- the visiting team's lone run.
Meanwhile, host St. Mary scored four times on a seven hits, which included a pair of homers.
Jamie Villalobos picked up the loss for the Inferno as she fanned three batters and walked none in the full six innings pitched, while St. Mary's Danielle Owens recorded 11 strikeouts and walked two for the complete game victory.
In the nightcap, Alverno fell behind 4-0 after two innings, but had eight-straight batters reach base safely in the top of the third to plate five runs for the one-run lead.
St. Mary answered and scored a pair of runs in each of the next two innings and retook the lead, while Alverno was held scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Down three runs, the Inferno responded with eight runs on six hits in the seventh, capped off by a three-run blast by Megan Rossi for her second hit of the inning.
St. Mary had a little left in the tank and plated three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Inferno held the hosts at bay for the victory.
Villalobos (4-2) recorded the win with 4.2 innings of relief work, while reliever Kayla Poppe gave up eight runs in five innings and took the loss for St. Mary.
All nine Inferno players with a plate appearance recorded a hit as the visitors smashed 17 in the nightcap, led by Rossi and Erika Wotnoske, who recorded three hits apiece.
Rossi also led with four RBIS, while Emily Ortner and Lauren Colette joined her with both multiple hits and RBIs in the game.
The split of the series brings the Inferno's record to 6-2, the best start to the season in program history after eight games.
Next action for Alverno is this Sunday at Franklin College where it will take on the host Grizzlies at 12 p.m. EDT, followed by a game with Olivet College at 2 p.m.
