MILWAUKEE -- Emily Ortner broke Alverno College's single-match record with 27 kills, but the Inferno lost the final three sets to visiting Marian University for a 3-1 defeat Saturday afternoon in Reiman Gymnasium.

The sophomore outside hitter surpassed the former school record by one, held by her sister Rebecca Schmid ('09) since the 2007 season in a five-set victory over Great Lakes Christian College.

After a convincing 25-17 win in the opening set, the Inferno (9-8, 1-4 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) dropped the next three, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-19, as the Sabres (6-15, 1-3 NACC) recorded their first win in 13 matches.

Ortner tallied back-to-back kills, her first two of the match, to give Alverno a 5-3 lead in the first set, and the host team cruised for the eight-point set win.

The Inferno never led in the second set, but was within two, 22-20, before three-straight successful attacks by the Sabres evened the match at one set apiece.

Alverno looked to bounce back with a commanding 6-1 lead in the third, but Marian battled ahead to a 14-13 lead it wouldn't relinquish for the three-point set victory.

In the fourth, an early 4-1 Alverno lead was quickly washed away by six-consecutive Inferno errors and the Sabres rode the momentum to the set and match win.

Danielle Schilawski had a match-high 29 digs for Alverno's defense, while Ortner added 19 for a double-double. Meranda Masse passed out a match-best 42 assists, and Cali Trepp eclipsed the 500-kill milestone with 10 to aid the Inferno offense.

Alverno completes a three-match homestand versus MSOE on Friday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m.
